FAQ Frequently Asked Questions
JK Helicopter Training -Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1.How long does it typically take to learn to fly a helicopter?
The time varies depending on training goals and individual progress, but most students could achieve a Private Pilot’s Licence in three months.
2.What is "autorotation," and why is it important?
Autorotation is a critical safety manoeuvre that allows a helicopter to land safely in the event of an engine failure. The rotor system continues spinning using airflow through the blades, enabling the pilot to maintain control and perform a controlled landing.

4.Do I need any flying experience before starting helicopter training?
No. Most students start with no flying experience at all. JK Helicopter Training teaches beginners step-by-step, from ground zero, all the way through to Private Pilot License (PPL) acquisition.
5.Is flying a helicopter difficult to learn?
You should have an average level of coordination and desire to fly. Turn up and we will do the rest.
6.Will I get to fly the helicopter on my first flight?
Yes! Introductory flights allow students to experience the controls while the instructor maintains full supervision and safety throughout the flight.
7.Am I too old or too young to learn to fly?
Helicopter training is suitable for a wide range of ages. As long as you meet the Civil Aviation Authority's minimum requirements and are medically fit, you can begin your journey towards becoming a pilot. You can start logging pilot training at age 14, go solo at 16 and acquire a Private Pilot License (PPLH) at a minimum of 17 years of age. There is no upper age limit.
8.What should I wear for my first helicopter lesson?
Comfortable clothing, flat closed-toe shoes, and sunglasses are recommended. Avoid loose items that could interfere with aircraft flight controls.
9.Can helicopter flying become a career?
Absolutely. Many helicopter pilots go on to careers in tourism, emergency medical services, search and rescue, aerial surveying, agriculture, law enforcement, offshore operations, and flight instruction.
10.What is the most exciting part of learning to fly a helicopter?
Many students say the most exciting moment is when they realise they are actually controlling the aircraft themselves. The combination of skill, freedom, and adventure makes helicopter flying a truly unforgettable experience.
11.What qualifications do I need to start helicopter training?
No previous aviation experience is required. You simply need enthusiasm, a willingness to learn, and the ability to meet the relevant aviation medical requirements, which is a Class 2 Medical.
12.How many flying hours are required to obtain a Private Pilot’s Licence?
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requires a minimum of 45 hours of flight training, of which 10 hours are Solo. This is not realistic though, as the national average in the UK is more like 60 hours.
13.Can I train part-time while working full-time?
Absolutely. Many students train around work, family, and other commitments. Flexible scheduling allows you to progress at a pace that suits your lifestyle.
